Ian has appeared in Courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has a wide range of experience in civil litigation since he was called to the Bar in 1979. His practice includes major commercial, construction, insurance and class action matters. He also practices extensively in the fields of administrative and municipal law.
Ian has been consistently recognized by his peers as among The Best Lawyers in Canada. Ian has again been recognized in the 2016 Edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada for his work in the practice areas of Bet-the-Company Litigation, Construction Law, Corporate and Commercial Litigation, and Legal Malpractice Law.
Ian has been peer review rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell.
Ian was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1996. He is also a Master of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.
In March 2004, Ian was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in America. He has fulfilled a number of roles with the College including Chair of the Atlantic Provinces Committee and co-Chair of the Access to Justice Committee.
He has a B.A. from Carlton University in Ottawa and a LL.B. from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He was also called to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 1978.
A member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and the Canadian Bar Association, he has lectured at various Continuing Legal Education Programs during his career.
Ian currently serves as a member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Advisory Council. He is past President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of St. John Ambulance and a past member of the St. John Ambulance National Board of Directors.
