Ian has a B.A. (Economics) from Carlton University in Ottawa and a LL.B. from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
Ian is recognized as one of the preeminent litigation counsel in Newfoundland and Labrador. He has extensive litigation experience across many areas of law, including commercial disputes, construction issues, class action litigation, energy law, administrative law and municipal law. Ian has represented municipal governments in various matters. His work in energy matters includes both the electricity and oil and gas sectors.
Awards and Recognition
Ian was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1996. He is also a Master of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 2004, Ian was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in America. He has fulfilled a number of roles with the College including Chair of the Atlantic Provinces Committee and co-Chair of the Access to Justice Committee.
Ian has been consistently recognized by his peers as among The Best Lawyers in Canada. Ian has again been recognized in the 2020 Edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada for his work in the areas of Bet-the-Company Litigation, Construction Law, Corporate and Commercial Litigation, and Legal Malpractice Law. He was named “Lawyer of the Year” for his work in Corporate and Commercial Litigation in St. John’s, NL.

Outside the Firm
Ian currently serves as a member of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Advisory Council. He is past President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of St. John Ambulance and a past member of the St. John Ambulance National Board of Directors.
