Liam is a partner with Curtis Dawe Lawyers. He joined the firm in 1996 after completing his B.A. (Honours), from St. Francis Xavier University and his LL. B from the University of New Brunswick. He was called to the Bar in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1997.
Liam’s practice is primarily in the area of litigation, with a focus on health law (professional negligence and discipline), utility regulation as well as civil and commercial litigation. He has appeared in Courts at all levels in the province as well as a variety of administrative tribunals. His work in the health law field is focused on malpractice defence and professional discipline and he provides services as independent counsel to a variety of professional disciplinary panels. As an adjunct to his litigation focus, Liam has a corporate commercial practice focusing on large commercial transactions.
Awards and Recognition
Liam was peer-selected for inclusion in the 2023 and 2024 editions of The Best Lawyers in Canada for his work in Corporate and Commercial Litigation and Administrative and Public Law, respectively.
Outside the Firm
Liam served two (2) terms as an elected Bencher of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador,
where he was a member of various committees during his tenure. He is a past Chair of the Health Law Section of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Bar Association. Liam is a past Chair and member of the Board of Directors of Lakecrest Independent School, where he also served on the School’s Governance and Compensation Committees.
Liam is a regular presenter at a variety of seminars and lectures in the field of health law and served as a lecturer for the Administrative Law Section of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador Bar Admission Course in 2018. He acts as in an advisory capacity to several local charitable groups and is currently a board member of the Calypso Fund, a nonprofit organization established to aid homeless and abandoned animals in need of veterinary care.
